Paris, April 16, 2012
Dear Aurelia Thierrée,
On 27 and 28 May, you are about to present "Murmures des Murs" (Whispering Walls) in Israel.

We are writing to invite you to cancel your representation and your arrival in Israel. This request is part of the BDS campaign "Boycott Divestment Sanctions," which is inspired by the boycott that helped end apartheid in South Africa. The BDS campaign aims to halt the Israeli settlement policy, apartheid and violation of human rights. Attached is the letter of particularly significant examples of this policy.

Maybe you think that art has nothing to do with politics? Unfortunately history has often shown that it can be a great way to attract people, divert them from crime, massacres, violations of law, presenting a face more virtuous.

Nissim Ben Sheetritt, former managing director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel, approached in these terms the link between culture and politics: "We see growing as a Hasbara (= Israel advocacy) tool of the first rank, and do not ... Differentiate Between Hasbara and culture "(Journal of Israeli" Haaretz ", September 21, 2005).

Hundreds of artists have already understood that culture is not a neutral activity, far from social reality and refused to be unwittingly, instruments of propaganda. Among those artists who have canceled their visit to Israel, we can mention: Jean-Luc Godard, Mike Leigh, Meg Ryan, Ken Loach, Dustin Hoffman, Vanessa Paradis, the defunct Lhasa, Roger Waters, Annie Lennox, Macy Gray, Carlos Santana , Elvis Costello, Gorillaz, The Pixies, Faithless, Massive Attack, Natacha Atlas ... Some of them wanted to accompany the cancellation by publishing an open letter to the attention of the Israeli people. Published in Israeli media, the letter allows them to express their regret at being unable to meet them, tell them that this cancellation is not against them but against the policies of Israel, that international law must finally be respected so that is born of peace.

For commitment to peace, is a commitment to justice. Aurélia Thierrée, we ask you to join the artists who boycott Israel, until that State respects international law, and to cancel the performance of "Whispering Walls" in Israel. By going to Israel you participate in the standardization of a colonial situation and believe that nothing unacceptable is not taking place there.

We remain at your disposal for any further information. BDS France CICP 21 ter rue Voltaire 75011
