OPEN LETTER to Sabahat Akkiraz & band, boycott the Israel Oud Festival

Sabahat Akkiraz is being asked to Boycott Israel

This OPEN LETTER asks Turkish singer Sabahat Akkiraz, who performs folk and Sufi music (here in a Palestinian keffiyeh )to cancel her gig in apartheid Israel.   Akkiraz is on twitter at https://twitter.com/sabahatakkiraz

Dear Sabahat Akkiraz and band members Tayyar Erdem, Savaş Gövtepe, Mustafa Dogan, Mehmet Sarialtun, and Alsan Ozan Aslan,

We at DPAI (Don’t Play Apartheid Israel) support the Palestinian call for a cultural boycott of Israel, and we are urging you to cancel your plans to perform for a segregated audience at the Israeli Oud Festival in Jerusalem scheduled for Saturday, 9 November 2013, 21:00, Jerusalem Theater, Henry Crown Hall.  Palestinian civil society has called for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel's policies of colonialism, occupation and apartheid towards the Palestinian people.[1]

Israel's attempts to hide systematic decades-long oppression and human-rights abuses against the Palestinians depend on its ability to maintain the facade of a  progressive and democratic image in the eyes of the international community. Israel often goes as far as promoting itself as "the only democracy in the Middle East.”   Israel's apartheid policies, however, even permeate events as joyous as concerts: Palestinian fans of your music living under the Israel’s brutal military occupation of the West Bank or its medieval siege of the Gaza Strip will be prohibited from coming to Jerusalem to enjoy your performance. These 4 million people who are being denied their most fundamental rights include many Palestinian women, who will not have the chance to be empowered by hearing you sing.

The Palestinian people are denied elementary freedoms: the freedom of movement, the freedom to access their stolen lands and the freedom to protest injustice without facing brutal repression.[2] Those living in the Gaza strip (56% of whom are children) live under a debilitating siege, limiting their access to water, medical supplies, and construction material.[3] This unimaginable situation takes place only about an hour away from your scheduled performance. In the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan, just minutes away from the scheduled venue, children are being abducted from their homes, in violation of international law, and taken into violent police interrogations with no access to their parents or a lawyer.[4]

Representatives of Palestinian civil society, including over 170 different organizations such as women, academic and worker groups, have called for a boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel’s policies. International artists are asked not to perform in Israel until it abides by its obligations under international law and reverses these policies.[5]

Some artists perform in Israel with the good will and intention to use their art as a means of changing Israeli public opinion and spreading the message of peace. One such example would be Roger Waters. These artists have later come to realize that their performance, as well-meaning as it was, has been hijacked and used to send a green light to the ongoing Israeli policies of oppression.  Your performance is already being flaunted by the Israeli establishment here:

“Sabahat Akkiraz, a member of the Turkish Parliament, is an outstanding Turkish folk vocalist, widely acclaimed as one of the foremost creators and performers of ethnic music. This is her Israel premier...Sabahat Akkiraz has recorded more than twenty albums, appeared worldwide and received numerous awards, including the Golden Butterfly in 2010 for Best Performance of Folk Music in Turkey. She has participated in numerous musical projects in Turkey and abroad. Her one-time performance in Israel closes this year's Oud Festival.” [6]

Not performing is important for the promotion of justice in this region, as Israeli policy makers are coming to understand that global civil society does not approve of their brutal policies towards the people of Palestine. Some prominent artists have stated:

Roger Waters: “In my view, the abhorrent and draconian control that Israel wields over the besieged Palestinians in Gaza, and the Palestinians in the occupied West Bank (including East Jerusalem), coupled with its denial of the rights of refugees to return to their homes in Israel, demands that fair minded people around the world support the Palestinians in their civil, nonviolent resistance. For me it means declaring my intention to stand in solidarity, not only with the people of Palestine, but also with the many thousands of Israelis who disagree with their governments racist and colonial policies, by joining a campaign of Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel, until it satisfies three basic human rights demanded in international law.”[7]

In 2012, Ross Daly, Giorgos Xylouris, Giorgos Manolakis, and Kelly Thoma cancelled plans to play at the Israel Oud Festival, stating  “After all, we're musicians with feelings and sensibilities, not music machines which can operate under all and any circumstances.”[8]

Macy Gray: “I had a reality check and I stated that I definitely would not have played there if I had known even the little that I know now.”[9]

Cassandra Wilson: “as a human rights activist, I identify with the cultural boycott of Israel.” [10]

Sabahat Akkiraz, understanding that the picket line has clearly been marked and that you cannot avoid taking a political stand on this matter, we are now asking you to take a moral stand. Please reconsider your participation in whitewashing Israeli apartheid.  Stand against oppression and for liberation, against deep rooted racism and in favor of justice and equality for all.

Sincerely,

We are a group, of over 1000 members, representing many countries around the globe, who believe that it is essential for musicians & other artists to heed the call of the PACBI, and join in the boycott of Israel. This is essential in order to work towards justice for the Palestinian people under occupation, and also in refugee camps and in the diaspora throughout the world.

OPEN LETTER to Katerina Papadopoulou and Ensemble

Papadopoulou asked to boycott Israel.
UPDATE: The correct Greek translation by the Greek Association for Solidarity with the Palestinian People is at http://bit.ly/1eXhfsn.  It was also noted that Greek singer Martha Frintzila bowed out of her performance at the Israel Government-sponsored Jerusalem Oud Festival in 2011 with a the statement that she: “...will not participate in Oud Festival in Jerusalem for conscientious and political reasons.” [A]

Dear Katerina Papadopoulou and Ensemble,

We at DPAI (Don’t Play Apartheid Israel) support the Palestinian call for a cultural boycott of Israel, and we are asking you not to perform at the Oud Festival there this month. Palestinian civil society has called for a boycott of apartheid Israel, and just as with apartheid South Africa, many artists are standing in solidarity with them and refusing to cross their picket line, we sincerely hope you will too. Why not join the growing list of artists who won’t lend their names to attempts to sanitise a brutal occupying regime, artists of conscience such as Faithless, Leftfield, Gorillaz, Klaxons, Roger Waters, Massive Attack, Gil Scott Heron, Santana, Pete Seeger, Pixies, Tindersticks, Elvis Costello, Ken Loach, Cat Power, Cassandra Wilson and many more who have refused to condone occupation, apartheid and war crimes. In 2012, Ross Daly, Giorgos Xylouris, Giorgos Manolakis, and Kelly Thoma cancelled plans to play at the Israeli state sponsored Oud Festival, stating  “After all, we're musicians with feelings and sensibilities, not music machines which can operate under all and any circumstances.”[1]

Please watch this short documentary made in cooperation with two artists who fully support the cultural boycott of Israel:  Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) and Alice Walker (Pulitzer prize winning author of the Color Purple)  In the film, Jahalin Bedouin community members explain how the Israeli government plans to forcibly displace them yet again — the community was originally displaced to the periphery of Jerusalem from their historic lands in the Naqab (Negev) desert during the 1948 ethnic cleansing of Palestine.

The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination stated:
The Committee is particularly appalled at the hermetic character of the separation of two groups, who live on the same territory but do not enjoy either equal use of roads and infrastructure or equal access to basic services and water resources. Such separation is concretized by the implementation of a complex combination of movement restrictions consisting of the Wall, roadblocks, the obligation to use separate roads and a permit regime that only impacts the Palestinian population (Article 3 of the Convention).[2]
Sadly, organizations such as the United Nations have done nothing to stop the fast pace of Israel’s aggression against the Palestinian people, prompting the legendary Roger Waters of Pink Floyd to say:
Where governments refuse to act people must, with whatever peaceful means are at their disposal. For me this means declaring an intention to stand in solidarity, not only with the people of Palestine but also with the many thousands of Israelis who disagree with their government's policies, by joining the campaign of Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions against Israel.
Katerina Papadopoulou, and ensemble members Sokratis Sinopoulos, Stefanos Dormbarakis, Nikos Mermigas, Kostas Meretakis and Ioannis Plagianakos, no international musician thus far has been able to bridge apartheid walls with their artistic talent, no matter how beautiful your music is, it  won’t help stop the injustice. We can hope that you do not support the Israeli government's policies, however if you play for the Israeli state sponsored oud festival, it will send the message that you are either unaware of the boycott or that you chose to ignore the boycott call made by Palestinian civil society in their struggle against apartheid.

The Palestinian people are denied elementary freedoms: the freedom of movement, the freedom to access their stolen lands and the freedom to protest injustice without facing brutal repression.[3] Those living in the Gaza Strip (56% of whom are children) live under a debilitating siege which limits their access to water, medical supplies, and construction material.[4] This unimaginable situation takes place very close to your scheduled performance in Jerusalem. In the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan, just minutes away from the scheduled venue, children are being abducted from their homes, in violation of international law, and taken into violent police interrogations with no access to their parents or a lawyer.[5]

Tens of thousands of Bedouin people have been forced off their land in the Negev not far from where you plan to play.  Can you really participate in the oud festival so close to where they are being ethnically cleansed?  We have included references [6] on how these desert people are struggling and fighting for survival below, we hope you will check them out even during your busy performing schedule.

Representatives of Palestinian civil society, including over 170 different organizations such as women, academics and unions, have called for a boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel’s policies. International artists are asked not to perform in Israel until it abides by its obligations under international law and reverses these policies.[7]

Until the siege on over 1.7 million people in Gaza is lifted, until Palestinian lands are returned to their rightful owners, until the millions of refugees’ lives are restored with the opportunity for a future, the global boycott of Israel is going to continue.  Please just decline to play Israel, don’t breach the boycott.

Warmly,
DPAI (Don’t Play Apartheid Israel)

DPAI (Dont Play Apartheid Israel)

Berliner Ensemble, In the Spirit of Bertolt Brecht, Do not Legitimize Israel's Occupation ! Boycott the Cameri Theatre !

Claus Peymann, Director of the Berliner Ensemble
Dear Mr. Claus Peymann, Director of the Berliner Ensemble,
To the Berliner Ensemble, from Israeli Citizens:  In the Spirit of Bertolt Brecht, Please do not Legitimize Israel's Occupation ! Please Boycott the Cameri Theatre !
We are Israeli citizens who are active against our government’s policies of racism, apartheid and occupation towards the Palestinian people. In particular, many of us are veteran activists in the campaign against Israel’s illegal colonization and settlement construction policies in the occupied West Bank. We have learned of your upcoming collaboration with the Cameri Theatre in the staging of Bertolt Brecht's Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui (The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui).
The Cameri is involved in severe violations of international law, through ongoing performance in the illegal Israeli settlement of Ariel. The construction of Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land violates international law, and Israeli actions in the occupied territories amount to war crimes. Ariel is surrounded by walls and fences, and closely guarded by soldiers and armed security personnel. A theatrical performance in a settlement is by definition a performance to an exclusively Israeli audience, with Palestinians living even in the nearest village being physically excluded from attending. By performing under such circumstances, the Cameri profits from, and legitimizes Israel’s illegal colonization policies, and becomes an accomplice to these crimes. As of now, the Cameri has scheduled a production of several plays  in Ariel.
In 2010, a large group of Israeli theatre professionals – actors, stage directors, playwrights – declared they would not take part in such performances. For several weeks, this was a major issue on the Israeli public agenda, and the aforementioned Israeli theatre professionals have received much support from colleagues abroad, such as Stephen Sondheim, Mary Rodgers, Tony Kushner, Mandy Patinkin, Theodore Bikel, Mira Nair, Julianne Moore, Vanessa Redgrave, Hal Prince and other Broadway and Hollywood stars. Those who collaborate with the Cameri  are taking a stand against these conscientious Israeli actors and playwrights who have refused to perform in the settlements, as well as a stand against universal principles of human rights and international law. http://www.thenation.com/article/154740/unsettling-protest-israel )
We would also  like to note that Mr. Peter Brook has realized this too, by calling off  the entire collaboration of his theatre,  The Bouffes du Nord, with the Cameri last year, following appeals from Israeli citizens and others. http://www.alternativenews.org/english/index.php/features/updates/5191-renowned-director-peter-brook-cancels-israel-performance-5191 )
A boycott is a means which one should take only as a measure of last resort. And by now there is ample evidence that we have no other choice. Mere international condemnation has not brought about an end to these policies, and action is required.
The Berliner Ensemble was Bertolt Brecht's theatre, and Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui is Bertolt Brecht's playIt would be hard to imagine a collaboration by Bertolt Brecht with an institution that performs in ethnically segregated venues on violently plundered land, as is the case regarding the settlement of Ariel!
Since the Cameri is complicit in grave violations of international law, which amount to war crimes, we are asking you not to legitimize this theatre through artistic collaboration. In particular we are asking you to cancel your performance in Tel Aviv in November 2013.
We will gladly address any questions or comments.
Sincerely,
